Fraud Statistics Jul 24 - Jun 25

In the 12 months to 30 June 2025 (FY25), fraud on payment cards decreased from $868 million (in FY24) to $854 million, with the overall card fraud rate declining from 77.6 cents per $1,000 spent (in FY24) to 71.8 cents.

In FY25, within the overall total: 

  • Card-not-present (CNP) fraud on Australian-issued cards used domestically declined 11.1 per cent from $351 million (in FY24) to $312 million.
  • CNP fraud on Australian-issued cards used online with overseas merchants remained stable, increasingly only 0.1 per cent to $434.3 million.
  • Lost and stolen fraud increased 27.9 per cent to $74.3 million.
  • Counterfeit/skimming fraud increased 11.6 per cent to $7.1 million.
  • Card-never-received fraud decreased 14.9 per cent to $2.4 million.
  • Fraud involving fraudulent applications increased 129.4 per cent to $2.0 million.
  • Other card fraud increased 41.5 per cent to $22.1 million.

In FY25, total spending on Australian-issued cards increased from $1.1 trillion (in FY24) to $1.2 trillion.

The domestic CNP fraud rate dropped to a record-low of 75 cents per $1,000 spent. However, the overseas CNP fraud rate remained more than 10 times higher ($10.75 per $1,000 spent).
