Fraud Statistics Jul 21 - Jun 22
In the 12 months to 30 June 2022 (FY22), fraud on payment cards increased 1.9%, to a total of $499.5 million. This compares to a 9.2% increase between FY20 and FY21.
In FY22, within the overall total:
- Card-not-present (CNP) fraud rose 2.9% to $454.6 million
- Lost and stolen fraud increased by 11.4% to $31.2 million
- Counterfeit/skimming fraud fell by 45.8% to $4.8 million
- Fraudulent application fraud fell by 56.3% to $0.8 million
- Card-never-received fraud fell by 44.2% to $1.4 million
- Other card fraud fell by 2.2% to $6.6 million
Spend on Australian issued cards was $913.7 billion for FY22, a 7.8% increase over FY21. The overall fraud rate was 54.7 cents per $1,000 spent, down from 57.8 cents in FY21, and well below the FY18 figure of 73.8 cents.
The end of FY22 marked the third full year of operation of the industry’s CNP Fraud Mitigation Framework.
