AusPayNet releases ATM and EFTPOS device data for September quarter

The payments industry self-regulatory body Australian Payments Network (AusPayNet) today released its September quarter statistics for automatic teller machines (ATMs) and electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) solutions in Australia.

As at 30 September 2022, the total number of active ATMs in Australia was 25,207, with active EFTPOS devices at 965,981.

AusPayNet’s ATM statistics for the 12 months to 30 September 2022 showed a 0.15% quarter-on-quarter increase (from 25,168 in June 2022), and a year-on-year increase of 1.03% (from 24,949 in September 2021).

EFTPOS statistics reflected a similarly marginal quarter-on-quarter increase of 1.18% (from 954,679 in June 2022) and a 4.57% increase year-to-year (from 923,731 in September 2021).

AusPayNet’s data release coincides with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s (APRA) recent annual release detailing the authorised deposit-taking institutions’ (ADI) points of presence statistics for the year to 30 June 2022. APRA’s statistics cover ADI points of presence only and are a subset of AusPayNet’s wider ATM and device statistics, which also include fleet numbers for non-ADI operators.

The marginal increase in active ATMs and EFTPOS terminals is attributable to venues and merchants re-opening post-COVID lockdowns and reflects the stability of active terminal fleets.

AusPayNet’s CEO, Andy White, said that despite the marginal increase in active ATM terminals during the September quarter, overall consumers were visiting ATMs less often.

“The continuing decline in cash usage at point-of-sale reflects the increasing preference of Australians for contactless cards and digital wallets to make purchases,” Mr White said.

“However, there are still consumers whose preference is cash. That preference needs to be supported, and therefore monitoring their access to, and merchants’ acceptance of, cash remains important,” Mr White said.

Globally, Australia continues to have one of the highest penetrations of EFTPOS devices.

AusPayNet’s ATM and EFTPOS device statistics for the year to 30 September 2022 can be accessed on AusPayNet’s website.
