Treasury Laws Amendment (Modernising Business Communications and Other Measures) Bill 2022

In January 2023, we responded to the Senate Standing Committee on Economics’ inquiry in relation to the Treasury Laws Amendment (Modernising Business Communications and Other Measures) Bill 2022.

Our submission supported the proposed changes in Part 3 of Schedule 1 of the Bill that aimed to facilitate the greater use of electronic payments by removing outdated restrictions that preserved where or how a payment may be made. We suggested extending this work program to modernising the Cheques Act and six other pieces of Commonwealth legislation that prescribed outdated payment methods (i.e. mandated the use of cheques). We noted that updating this legislation to reflect payments neutrality would future-proof the legislation.
