ACCC Digital Platform Services Inquiry – Discussion Paper for Interim Report No. 6

In September 2022, we responded to the ACCC’s its sixth Issues Paper, ‘Digital Platform Services Inquiry – March 2023: Report on Social Media’. The Inquiry sought views on potential competition and consumer issues in the provision of social media services to consumers and businesses in Australia by social media platforms.

In our submission, we highlighted that scam activity is growing across Australia and significant scam losses originate through social grooming on social media platforms. We suggested that social media platforms should ameliorate that by:

  • Stopping scams at source as part of preventing consumer harms
  • Collaborating with the scam ecosystem by aligning scam categorisation, and by sharing data and information
  • Participating in any National Anti-Scam Code
  • Contributing to joint customer awareness campaigns.
